In recent years, climate change has made these regions more accessible to smaller boats, allowing adventurers to reach further into these unique environments.

Preparing yourself: Developing good routines, assessing risk, and preparing your crew
Preparing your boat: Tips on design, heating, engine, steering, anchors, and electrics
Sailing in ice: Understanding instrumentation, charts, and what to do if you get stuck
Safety: MOB procedures, dealing with polar bears, glaciers, and dinghy protocols
Communication: Guidance on VHF, satellite, and SSB communications
Weather: How to interpret GRIB files and read ice charts
Anchoring and mooring: Choosing the right types and number of anchors and mooring lines
Clothes: Recommended hiking and ski wear, following the three-layer principle
Cruising areas: Detailed information on destinations like Svalbard, Antarctica, South Georgia, and more
Whether you're tackling the North-West Passage aboard your own yacht, heading to Antarctica, or simply keeping your boat in the water for the quieter, more beautiful winter season, this book is essential reading for sailors aiming to prepare for safe and enjoyable adventures in cold waters.
About the Authors
Bob Shepton, a Tillman Award winner and YJA Apollo Yachtsman of the Year 2013, is one of the most experienced Arctic sailors. Shepton, who recently published his biography “Addicted to Adventure – Between Rocks and Cold Places,” has also contributed to this book. This spring, the 79-year-old reverend sailed to Greenland for another Sail & Climb expedition, continuing his adventures.
Jon Amtrup has circumnavigated Svalbard, crossed the Atlantic twice, sailed the North Sea ten times, explored the East Coast of Greenland, and cruised extensively in high latitudes along the Norwegian coast in both summer and winter. He is the author of Sail to Svalbard, Harbour Guide Bergen-Kirkenes, and the authorized sailing biography of HM King Harald V of Norway.
The renowned Polar Circumnavigators Trond Aasvoll and Elena Solovyeva have also contributed insights on navigating the North-West and North-East Passages, respectively.
